Railbuses are a special kind of railcar that is particularly lightweight and was created for the purpose of carrying passengers on infrequently utilized train lines. They are built similarly to buses, as their name would imply, with four wheels on a fixed wheelbase as opposed to bogies and typically having a bus body or a modified bus body.
The role of railbuses is now being played by modern light Diesel Multiple Unit railcar types. The word "railbus" is no longer frequently used to refer to these automobiles, nevertheless.
